ips do get stale as can be
some of them remain fresh
really comes down to the ip in question
you can’t look at something like metroid in the same light you’d look at something like mario kart
or something more in the middle like zelda
in the broadest sense, i’d say nintendos real strength in maintaining a series is that they don’t release their big games too frequently
they’ll spend the better part of a generation going back to the drawing board and developing something different
they don’t flood the market with a big new zelda or mario every year or two
so by the time the next one comes around, gamers are ready for more, and nintendo has had enough time to make it stand out as something unique when compared to the previous entry
that’s a whole new shitter category
i still got my mario kart for game cube sealed/wrapped(got it included with the console), got tired of that game early
and i used to be zelda fan but with the new direction i not even care about that either
i got nintendo fatique, glad they can make kids pleased tho
a lot of adults don’t buy them
but there’s a never ending supplying of new young gamers who keep buying them
not sure what tc is talking about
here on system wars all the vast majority do is make anti nintendo posts
most on here are havingfranchise fatigue about games i doubt they even play
it is easier for nintendo to do this for a key few reasons
they change it up quite a bit
for example: zelda windwaker is very different from minishcap, which is very different from breath of the wild, which is very different from a link between worlds
more much so than uncharted games are different
(to be honest uncharted could really just be one long game they are that similar
mario kart is nothing like mario sunshine, which is nothing like mario maker
final fantasy by square enix is a series that also benefits from this
(you really never know wtf you are gonna get when a new final fantasy game comes out, you might love it, you might completely hate it, but you cannot say it is the same!)
the mainline games are not annual (very important)
3d mario games take about 4-5 years to make on average
zelda main games are about 3-4 years on average
metroid is about 3-4 years (would love to see more of those)
this allows the gamer time to miss the big games
(as a contrast to like cod/assasins creed/madden where you do not even get to finish one before the next one is out
does not matter if you are a nintendo hater or not, most can agree that on average nintendo releases quality non-buggy products
i have always been impressed with how they pull it off time and again and never release a buggy game
(sad that that is something to get excited about, but most developers today think they can sell us buggy games and fix them later
nintendo really is not into the for the most part
sonic is my example of a game that people got sick of for this reason
quality took a big hit over time
i would fall though levels all the time in sonic games
this is something that just never happens with nintendo games
they have a lot of different series that fans wait a long time to see return
so of the series have hot years then go away for a time
nintendo has over 50 game series
some are waiting for the next warioware game, while others want a paper mario
some want fire emblem (those are happy people now), while others wish that we would get a great animal crossing this year on switch
from punchout, to kid icarus, to xenoblade, to kirby, like or hate nintendo the fact is they have crazy range of games in the 1st party house
for me the one series that feels overly redundant that nintendo makes is pokemon
i like the series, but they stick so close to the script and release too frequently for my tastes
nintendo’s by far not the only company to keep using the same franchises over and over
capcom still pushes their street fighter and monster hunter series
namco pumps out tekken and pacman every once in awhile
hell microsoft’s key franchises are halo, gears, and forza which have been going on for nearly 10+ years now
how do these franchises survive? well sometimes companies just stop making these games and just revisit them after a long hiatus
we’re currently seeing that to a franchise of nintendo’s we’ve long thought was one of the main games and that is metroid
and well sometimes the games are just that good
i think mjorh pretty much nailed it
nintendo’s focus on mechanics in their design philosophy and distinction in level design itself makes it seem like a fresh enough experience every time, despite taking place in the same universe
i wish nintendo would take much more initiative in creating enitely new ips as that’s where a lot of the fun comes from, but to their credit, they are able to be successful in reusing the same stagnant window dressings they have been doing for years
a pretty large testament to their talent
release frequency and variety in gameplay
generally a nintendo console gets one mario 3d platformer, one mario kart, one zelda and 1 metroid in its lifetime
same with the likes of mario tennis or golf
there are some consoles that break that rule (the wii got 2 galaxies though i would argue that galaxy 2 should have been a wiiu launch title) but generally its 1 per gen per device
also within that ip things change a lot from game to game
the jump from 2d to 3d was a massive deal back on the n64
the combat system was completely overhauled in skyward sword
the entire overall structure of the game was changed in botw
but within the ip things change a lot
the only real yearly fart it out the door release that nintendo have is mario party (i think a new one comes every year) and its generally considered a bit rubbish anyway
compare that to other companies
the ps3 had 3 uncharted games in its lifetime
2 god of war games, 2 gt games and so on
the 360 had 2-3 halo games, 3 gears games, 2 forza games etc
then there are the yearly fart it out the door titles like cod and creed
between those releases not a lot changes
more cars, prettier graphics, better mocap
but behind all that they dont tinker with the formula much
they dont even really add to the formula much
it sold well the first time
i would argue that one of fhe biggest reasons the ps1 was so successful is because nintendo was perceived as stale and out-of-touch in the mid 90s
to nintendo’s credit, they didnt budge
what was once challenged as fatigued or stale is now consistency
no one can deny the talent of their internal studios or the enduring brand power of their franchises
they are sacred cows for fans, have become somewhat mythologised by them
criticism is in some cases just not allowed – and they are only really honest about the games when the new one comes out
hence skyward sword isn’t the 93 metacritic game that it was portrayed as at the time and people are prepared to be more honest now even though they lost their minds over a 7
both reviewers and gamers are blinded somewhat by nostalgia
that isn’t to say none of these games are good – by now nintendo is fine tuning these games to a tee
they can’t really be ever that bad, but i do wonder how you can spend your time playing the same games over and over again
and for the life of me i can’t see how a simple kart racer is worthy of such adulation
i can understand the hype for zelda (some of them are worthy of the score, some of them aren’t) and i can understand to a degree the hype for mario platformers (although this is an old fashioned throwback of a genre, they are the finest example consistently) but kart racers? it’s like getting overhyped for block puzzle games
i do think nintendo has a wealth of franchises they should be calling on, but i’ve stressed the need to move on and create new
instead, the fans sit around waiting for “the mario kart” and “the zelda” and “the mario 3d” and “the mario sports” and seem happy with that
i will applaud nintendo when they do come up with something fresh that isn’t set in the mushroom kingdom and isn’t aimed at morons (1-2 switch, wii music), but their dwindling die hards seem to be happy with more of the same
and there are franchises they have they don’t touch now
f zero, wave race, golden sun
how about putting these into the spotlight?
@shewgenja :and you’d be wrong
mario 64, ocarina of time, starfox 64, banjo, goldeneye etc
none of these were viewed as stale but there’s only so much nintendo games alone can do
franchise fatigue does happen, with the best example from recent years being the new super mario bros
even though both new super mario bros
2 for 3ds and new super mariobros
u sold reasonably well on their platforms, releasing them a couple of months apart burnt the franchise out quickly
they went from selling tens of millions per game to just millions, and it has gone quiet for five years
this probably comes down to nintendo being gameplay oriented
they come up with ideas and try to tie it to an existing franchise
so while games may or may not be similar aesthetically, they tend to change quite a bit in gameplay
in saying that, they’re not completely immune
for example, smash bros, animal crossing and mario kart can suffer from this
however, this is mitigated by the fact they nintendo tend to release their core franchises once-ish
