if the core concept of a game is solid, as long as you don’t try to drastically re-invent the wheel, you can keep selling the same game over and over, with a few minor tweaks each time
that, plus actual quality control, so that their games are very rarely released as a buggy mess, and you build a solid fanbase
i do love how some people are so salty over this, that they have to qq all over every positive nintendo thread

right, i agree in that, while i love things like splatoon (and if arms is like that i will love it too), i am more interesting in seeing them take on something of the scope of zelda or metroid or even mario
and yeah, xenoblade is great in that regard, but more of that
so i hope they push for experiences of that sort, too
as for their old ips, i agree and disagree- a lot of those ips are dead either because they weren’t very good, or because they’re redundant
like, wave race, 1080º, things like that- what’s the point? on the other hand, shit like f-zero and metroid, more of that, please
on which note, i am ready to bet that metroid will be at e3 this year, but that’s besides the point
the point is every publisher has dormant, dead ips- sony themselves have around a dozen from the ps1 era alone that they’re not using, as an example

having dormant ips is just a side effect of having been in the business for this long
the question is, is nintendo keeping its catalog varied in terms of gameplay and tone? is it investing in new ip? is it keeping things fresh for its existing tentpole ips? the answer to all those questions is yes
i think, for now, they can go scott free
of course, should they develop an intolerable reliance on just existing ip again in the future like they had not so long ago, then the criticism would be warranted, again
otherwise people would complain about not having sequels to a great ip they love
what do you want? sequels or no sequels?
make up your minds!!!! the reality of the situation is that gamer’s, especially millennial’s, are a bunch of whiners and complainers
too many games, not enough games, too many sequels, not enough sequels
next someone will complain that there isn’t enough criticism or too much criticism
why can’t more gamer’s just accept reality for what it is and either play a game or don’t play it and stop caring what other gamers are doing?

they do fatigue i know mario and zelda do
take botw while it’s step in the right direction repeats flaw or two that previous zelda have
identical objectives for the main 4 dungeons (5 switches to activate)
the divine beast dungeons were small compared older zelda, aesthetically identical right down to the music if i recall(only played through once)
copy pasted and recolored dragons
and there weren’t any midbosses
sure there were lynel but it was only a matter of better equipment and some skill
5 or 8 out of 10(i cold have done wit a plot wit or two especially gi’ve what ganon was when we fight him)
also pain on the butt gyroscope puzzles
in mario’s case it was the step back to 2d and trying to please nostalgia whiners wanting basic barebones mario

botw’s story was told poorly, it was kinda barely there
i could have done with some events popping up as we go
like helping defend hate no from monsters or helping rebuild the ruined parts of hyrule(that’d make for a good post game
) hyrule’s army is gone so why not make link a captain of the guard and rebuild and clear the goo from the castle
i feel like a lot of action could take place as zelda becomes queen like a usurper undermining zelda’s work
if nintendo released a new game in a single franchise every single year like call of duty or assassin’s creed or even 3 games in a single franchise for a single platform like sony did with uncharted and microsoft did with halo then they would suffer from more fatigue, but nintendo doesn’t typically do that
nintendo typically only releases one or two games in a franchise per console and then you don’t see that ip again until years later when it’s on another system, so this gives people a break from the ip and time to miss the ip
some of their ips even go multiple generations before getting a new release
nintendo franchises absolutely suffer franchise fatigue
most gamers (imho) that enjoy nintendo games enjoy the nostalgia and the impeccable gameplay mechanics of nintendo games
although you can say the same for say halo, gears, uc ext
im willing to bet that most gamers who complain about certain franchises still buy them

i’ve been an avid nintendo fan since the nes and it just makes me so sad that some ip’s get shelved for years and never get the recognition that they deserve
what nintendo ip’s deserve a good comeback? i’m gonna say custom robo and baten kaitos
both great games on the gamecube (my most favorite console of all time) that i’ve put a lot of time and love into

dark dawn may not have been amazing, but the series did not deserve to die there
@discogentleman i’ve always said that murasame castle would work perfectly as a combat-focused action-adventure game, in a similar vein to 3d zelda (just like the original game), but way more action focused and a less focus on puzzles and exploration i guess
ice climber could make a return as a captain toad-style (puzzle-)platformer
small worlds/dioramas with a mountain in the middle you need to climb
add in items and enemies, and you’ve got an interesting take on the ip
@harmonie i would definitely appreciate a revival of golden sun
i really loved the first two games, but never finished dark dawn
the series definiely did not deserve to die there

yeah, any kind of puzzle co-op game would work for ice climbers, and the switch is the ideal system for that

the problem with ice climbers, like with a lot of nintendo’s particularly older ip, is that they were products of their time, built around specific hardware limitations with extremely simplistic gameplay/concepts, hence the often uninspired or otherwise simplistic titles of many of these older games
sure, nintendo could make a new ice climbers game, but i see no reason why they should make a new ice climbers game
they have proven with kid icarus that an old game can indeed be repurposed and given a new lease on life, but the wii reboot of punch-out!! was just more of the same, and there’s nothing particularly wrong with that, especially as it was quite fun, but i can’t see ice climbers succeeding at being repurposed like kid icarus was or merely remade with modern a/v like
